Students in Colorado have walked out on the Pledge of Allegiance in protest. One of the things they named was the improper inclusion of the phrase "under God" in the pledge. I agree with them 100%. The inclusion of the religious phrasing is un-American and exclusionary. It violates the 1st ammendment which requires the government to be completely neutral with regard to religion.

For the cost of our wasteful national folly in Iraq, we could have funded 11 manned missions to Mars.

Bill O'Reilly:
I couldn't get over the fact that there was no difference between Sylvia's restaurant and any other restaurant in New York City. I mean, it was exactly the same, even though it's run by blacks, primarily black patronship... There wasn't one person in Sylvia's who was screaming, "M-Fer, I want more iced tea."
What was Bill O'Reilly expecting to see at a black-owned restaurant with black patrons? Was he really shocked that people weren't throwing food around the place, dancing on the tables, as well as other un-restaurant-like activities? What kind of racist fantasies does Bill O'Reilly have anyways?

Let's see what he says next:

That's right. That's right. There wasn't one person in Sylvia's who was screaming, "M-Fer, I want more iced tea."
You know, I mean, everybody was -- it was like going into an Italian restaurant in an all-white suburb in the sense of people were sitting there, and they were ordering and having fun. And there wasn't any kind of craziness at all.

The version of dc included with the Debian stable distribution is 1.3, and that version understands the .dcrc init file. The version of dc included with the Debian testing distribution is 1.3.94, and that version does not understand the .dcrc file.

WTF all of the sudden GNU dc doesn't accept the .dcrc initialization file. I'm checking the original GNU source code for it and there's no check for .dcrc in it at all, and strace confirms that my binary doesn't ever check for a .dcrc file.

This video does a pretty good job of showing how the media gets away with repeating the official positions rather than actual reporting. For the most part, TV journalists just replay and repeat the scripts written for them by the people they are supposed to be investigating.

This kind of reporting is how we wound up in such a huge mess in Iraq.

In 1797, the United States signed a treaty which stated "The United States is not a Christian any more than it is a Jewish or Mohamaddan Nation." By the Constitution of the United States of America, that treaty is the law of the land. Anyone who claims that the United States is a Xtian country is just wrong.

Conservatives like to claim the media is liberal. This is not true, as anyone who pays any attention at all can attest. If the media is liberal, then where are the liberal guys who are as clearly partisan as Bill O'Reily, Hannity, or even his sidekick Colmes? The conservatives claim that everyone else in the media is liberal, but this claim falls down flat in comparison to the one news personality who is actually liberal - Keith Olbermann. Media Matters exposed the myth of the conservative television media, and they have released a new report which shows clearly that newspapers also devote far more space to conservative opinion than to liberal opinion.

USA Today is reporting that a majority of Americans think that the country was founded as a Christian nation, which is completely untrue. Across the board attitudes regarding tolerance towards religion and speech were more negative, and I find that trend particularly worrying. Americans need to have more education on the 1st Amendment and should be should be taught that the USA is an explicitly secular nation, founded on secular principles.

Cracked Magazine was something I read when I was a kid. My mother used to buy copies for me at the supermarket every month. It was like Mad Magazine, except it was even more juvenile. It was funny and silly, and sadly the print magazine stopped publication quite a while ago. It still lives on the Internet. It's still funny and silly, but on the computer screen it's achieved something that it never achieved on the grocery store magazine rack: brilliance. Mad Magazine might have made you laugh, but it could never tell you why you were unhappy.

The new Chinese health chief, Health Minister Chen Zhu, says that Chinese products are safe, and Americans are just hypersensitive.

I think he's just whining because his peer over at the State Food and Drug Administration was executed for taking bribes in the dog food scandal.

New Track Media, the company that purchased the assets of Sky Publishing, is continuing their quest to cheapen one of the mainstays of Astronomy journalism. My "Sky and Telescope" magazine arrived this month with a cheap staple binding. It looks like cheap crap, it feels like cheap crap, and it will last like cheap crap.

Ron Paul is very popular among Libertarians on the Internet. For a good look inside the brains of Ron Paul's fans, read the bizarre blog of Ilana Mercer, super Libertarian. Do we really want a President that thinks like this?
