Wednesday, 24 January, 2007. 05:51:04 PMAnother company has purchased a mailing list which contained an address
which I originally entered as a spamtrap on the digitalcamera4free.com
website. The
address is distinctive: digitalcamera4freecom@pdrap.org. My Honda
dealership was ripped off by a mailing list matching service almost
a year ago, and now Discover Card has fallen victim to the same
ripoff scheme.
The e-mail from Discover is reproduced below. At first I thought
it was a phishing attempt, but a close look showed it to be genuine.
The last 4 digits of the account were correct, and all the links went
to the actual discovercard.com website. I called the number on the back
of my Discover card and quickly confirmed that the e-mail was genuine.
I told them what had happened, and verified that they had only filled
in the e-mail address from the spammer list. There is a real danger here
that a company could fill in an address as well, which would be a real
mistake because I remember entering my address on the digitalcamera4free.com
website as 111 F**k street. Even an obviously bogus streetname attached
to an e-mail address is not enough to prevent a spam lister from selling
the address to anybody, or to prevent companies like Discover from buying
the bogus address.

What You Should Know About a Discover Home Equity Line of Credit
(1) This offer is non-transferable and available to homeowners who
are 18 years of age or older. Valid for owner-occupied, single-family
residences, townhouses, condominiums and for home equity lines from
$25,000 to $500,000 with an 80% or less loan-to-value (LTV) ratio. Not
available on co-ops and mobile homes. Credit lines less than $25,000
or credit lines with a LTV greater than 80% are available at different
terms. Please contact a loan consultant at 1-800-207-2925 for details.
If approved, you will receive a rate ranging from Prime -.50% (currently
7.75% APR) to Prime + .25% (currently 8.50% APR) depending on your
financial information and creditworthiness. The APR will vary as the
Prime Rate varies. The Prime Rate is published in the Money Rates
section of The Wall Street Journal and was 8.25% on 12/07/06. Regardless
of the Prime Rate, during the first 5-years of the loan, the APR will
never be more than one and a half percentage points higher than the
initial APR disclosed on the Home Equity Agreement and Disclosure
Statement ("Note"). The maximum rate is 18%. Rates may change without
notice. All loans are subject to satisfactory appraisal, title and
property insurance. A real estate appraisal fee will be charged to loans
originated in the states of Alaska and Hawaii. A closing cost option
is available with rates as low as Prime -.75% (currently 7.50% APR) to
Prime -.25% (currently 8.0% APR). Closing costs vary according to how
much you borrow and where you live. For example, the closing costs for
a $25,000 loan could range from $175 to $1,500. Some states have state,
county and municipal mortgage-related taxes for which the borrower is
responsible.
A $50 annual fee is waived the first year. If an account is
cancelled within 3 years, an early termination fee of $350 will apply
(not applicable in TX). Lines of credit have a 10-year term, interest
is charged only on the outstanding balance. If you make interest-only
payments for the life of the loan, you must pay any remaining balance in
a single balloon payment. Home Equity Lines of Credit not available in
DC.
Special rules apply for Texas Home Equity Lines of Credit: The minimum
loan amount is $25,000 with available equity up to 80%. Closing costs
range from $200 to $2,000 depending on the loan amount. The annual fee
and early termination fee do not apply. In Texas, there is a minimum
of $4,000 for each draw and an additional 15-year amortization period
of monthly principal and interest payments that replaces the balloon
payment. The no closing cost program is not available in Texas.

Austin's been completely shut down by ice for three days, and I missed
the entire thing. My flight to Chicago on Monday morning departed right
as the ice storm started. Alex and Kristiana have been stuck in the
house for three days, but they had plenty of supplies. Tomorrow morning
Austin should thaw out and get back to normal.

I smashed my iPod shuffle in the car door last week. It fell out of my pocket
when I was getting in the car. One of the sound channels is broken,
but other than that it still works. I'm going to use it as a 512MB memory
stick instead of an MP3 player. I picked up a new 2nd generation Shuffle at Fry's
last week, and it's pretty nice. It's impossibly small and requires a special
charger stand, but other than that it's a perfect little device for listening
to podcasts.

Since I am a preacher by trade, I suppose it is not surprising that I have seven major reasons for bringing Vietnam into the field of my moral vision.* There is at the outset a very obvious and almost facile connection between the war in Vietnam and the struggle I, and others, have been waging in America. A few years ago there was a shining moment in that struggle. It seemed as if there was a real promise of hope for the poor -- both black and white -- through the poverty program. There were experiments, hopes, new beginnings. Then came the buildup in Vietnam, and I watched this program broken and eviscerated, as if it were some idle political plaything of a society gone mad on war, and I knew that America would never invest the necessary funds or energies in rehabilitation of its poor so long as adventures like Vietnam continued to draw men and skills and money like some demonic destructive suction tube. So, I was increasingly compelled to see the war as an enemy of the poor and to attack it as such.

My external 80G USB drive was dumped on the tile floor by an un-named
3 year old yesterday, so that forced a server upgrade. I bought a new
500G Seagate Barracuda for my server, and the 80G drive that was in the
server will replace the dead USB disk. I just finished moving the server to
the new disk, and it's up and running.
