Slaughter told us (AMERICABlog),"that Frist, DeLay and probably others had some day traders working out of their offices." Those working out of the Congressional offices "would find out there's a bill being written by lobbyists, that there would be no asbestos bill ... and when the market opened the next day, the cost of asbestos stock had doubled."

If I did that, I'd be in prison. The scandal is still growing, and by the time it's done, I think Bill Frist will be in prison, and DeLay will earn additional years in prison.

The Pluto New Horizons mission lifted off successfully today, and it on its way to Jupiter, and then to Pluto. It'll reach Jupiter in 2007, when Kristiana is 4 years old. When it reaches Pluto in 2015, Kristiana will be 12 years old!

Yet another scandal is going to break. Bill Frist and Tom DeLay both had day traders working right in their offices. They were trading stocks based on insider information that Frist and DeLay were feeding them. The SEC is already investigating Frist on insider trading charges from his trust fund manipulation.

There's another delay in the New Horizons launch. They'll try again on Thursday.

Al Gore made an important speech yesterday. Here's the main points:

- A special counsel should immediately be appointed by the Attorney General.
- Second, new whistleblower protections should immediately be established for members of the Executive Branch who report evidence of wrongdoing.
- Third, both Houses of Congress should hold comprehensive hearings into these serious allegations of criminal behavior.
- Fourth, the extensive new powers requested by the Executive Branch in its proposal to extend and enlarge the Patriot Act should, under no circumstances be granted.
- Fifth, any telecommunications company that has provided the government with access without a warrant...should immediately cease and desist.

Wal-Mart Sends Tennessee Jobs To South Korea

From todays Arkansas Democrat-Gazette:

Winning a contract means a small vendor like [TV Guardian CEO Mike] Seals may see his product on Wal-Mart shelves across the globe. But it can be a painful victory since making a product that meets Wal-Marts price requirements can mean losing U.S. jobs to workers overseas. Small vendors can make useful industry contacts selling to the giant retailer, but they must remain nimble enough to give customers, and Wal-Mart, a winning product

At the end of the meeting, the Wal-Mart buyer said he wanted to start selling TV Guardians in 500 stores, Seals recalled. He wanted to sell it for $49. We had to figure out how to manufacture huge quantities inexpensively.

TV Guardians factory was at that time in Tennessee. Seals had to move manufacturing to South Korea to meet Wal-Marts low retail price

[Seals] was consoled by the fact that South Korea, unlike China, is a democracy with factories that pay workers a living wage.

I'm upgrading my Windows game machine to Windows XP so I can use Skype video. The upgrade process failed to set the registry permissions on the network card PCI entries correctly, and I was unable to get the right permissions on the entries. Whoever thought that system configurations should be in a registry database was an idiot. Anyway, I have to fix the problem with a full scratch installation of Windows XP.

Yet another lie bites the dust.
The National Security Agency advised President Bush in early 2001 that it had been eavesdropping on Americans during the course of its work monitoring suspected terrorists and foreigners believed to have ties to terrorist groups, according to a declassified document.

The NSA's vast data-mining activities began shortly after Bush was sworn in as president and the document contradicts his assertion that the 9/11 attacks prompted him to take the unprecedented step of signing a secret executive order authorizing the NSA to monitor a select number of American citizens thought to have ties to terrorist groups.

Another lie bites the dust.
Former President Clinton said Thursday that he never ordered wiretaps of American citizens without obtaining a court order, as President Bush has acknowledged he has done.

The big story today is all about the tears of Mrs. Alito as her husband was grilled by the committee yesterday. Here's a photo of her tears.

Wait, sorry, that's a little Iraqi girl holding the BRAINS OF HER PARENTS in her hands after American soldiers blasted them out of their heads.

Impeach Bush, and deny Alito a seat on the supreme court. I am so pissed off that the news media is focusing on something as silly as a staged crying act. Mrs. Alito started crying during the question of Senator Graham (R), and she got up in tears, right on cue when Graham commented that the hearings were a little hard on Alitos family. It's a little suspicious that Senator Graham coached Alito and his wife in the White House before the hearings started, and then that little crying drama happened during Graham's questioning.

While we were in Michigan for Christmas, Kristiana made a noticeable advancement in her cognitive abilities. She started using more full sentences, and demonstrated advanced understanding and memory. Alex is making a new dish for dinner right now and she needed the recipe, so she sent Kristiana upstairs to get it. Kristiana came to my desk, asked for the recipe, and took it back down to Alex. That's something she wasn't doing a month ago.

Tom DeLay is a real piece of work. He stepped down today, under serious pressure from the House Republicans who are worried about their own careers. He claimed that he was always ethical, and that he's just being persecuted by an overzealous prosecuter. That's pure comedy, since people on his own staff are pleading guilty in their own legal troubles.

And, the House Republicans are trying to spin the removal of DeLay as a sign of their intolerance of corruption. The truth is that DeLay was removed not because he was corrupt, but because he was caught.

Secretary Leavitt Releases Guide to Help Individuals and Families Get Informed and Be Prepared For a Pandemic

HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt today announced the release of "Pandemic Influenza Planning: A Guide for Individuals and Families," a new tool to help Americans understand the threat of pandemic influenza and specific actions they can take to protect themselves and their families.

"Pandemics are global in nature, but their impact is local. When the next pandemic strikes, it is likely to touch the lives of every individual, family and community," Secretary Leavitt said. "This new guide is important reading in every household. It explains the challenges posed by a pandemic outbreak and identifies common-sense steps Americans should take in their homes now to prepare for a pandemic."

Secretary Leavitt released the guide at a Pandemic Planning Summit with Arizona officials and community leaders today. This summit is the second in a series of forums that will be convened in each state over the next few months.

The handbook includes a "Pandemic Flu Planning Checklist for Individuals and Families" and "Family Emergency Health Information Sheet to help people gather information and resources they may need. The checklist breaks activities into three categories: To plan for a pandemic;" "To limit the spread of germs and prevent infection;" and "Items to have on hand for an extended stay at home." Examples of specific preparations include:

* Having any nonprescription drugs and other health supplies on hand, including pain relievers, stomach remedies, cough and cold medicines, fluids with electrolytes and vitamins;
* Talking with family members and loved ones about how they would be cared for if they got sick or what will be needed to care for them in another home;
* Teaching children to wash hands frequently and appropriately, covering coughs and sneezes with tissues, and modeling the correct behavior;
* Having ready-to-eat canned meats, fruits, vegetables, soups, bottled water and cleaning supplies on-hand for an extended stay at home.

The release of this new tool builds on the Administration's overall planning to increase pandemic preparedness. President Bush has outlined a coordinated government strategy that includes the establishment of the new International Partnership on Avian and Pandemic Influenza, stockpiling of vaccines and antiviral medications, expansion of early-warning systems domestically and abroad and new funding and initiatives for local and state level preparedness.

In December, Secretary Leavitt met with senior officials from all 50 states and launched a series of preparedness summits to be held in every state over the next several months with the goal of enhancing state and local preparedness. In addition to todays guide, Secretary Leavitt has issued preparedness checklists for businesses and state and local health departments to aide their pandemic preparedness efforts. Next week, the Secretary will participate in state planning summits in Vermont, West Virginia, Rhode Island and Georgia.

Additional information to help schools, the travel industry and faith-based and community organizations increase their preparedness will be issued in coming weeks. A copy of the Pandemic Influenza Planning: A Guide for Individuals and Families, other checklists and pandemic planning information is available online at http://www.pandemicflu.gov
