Today is the first day the Kristiana is able to sit up from a lying-down position. That skill is already being put to good use. Alex just put her to bed a few minutes ago, and when she went up again a few minutes later to check on her, Kristiana was sitting up playing with her busybox.

Gilb's Law:

Anything you need to quanitfy can be measured in some way that is superior to not measuring it at all.

Tom Gilb is the author of Software Metrics

I don't think I agree with this, because the answer of "I don't know" is more honest than an inaccurate measurement. Maybe every measurement should always be written with error bars.

I'm now tracking Vitamin C in my food database. I'm going to be adding a few other things to track soon.

Just for the record, medical malpractice insurance is 1% of health care costs. Do not believe the people who claim that capping damages is the key to getting health care costs under control. They are not telling the truth.

Went to Gruene, TX yesterday with our friend Marie. That town is a little treasure that we hadn't discovered for some reason. The main attraction seems to be the river and the various inner tube businesses that will drop you off upstream, to float back down to the city. The town itself is very small, but very pretty. There's quite a few antique and knick-knack shops, and a very beautiful restaurant called the Grist Mill, which used to be the site of an old cotton gin. We sat in the River Room.

To transfer a laser printed image to another surface, coat the paper in mint oil and rub the back to transfer the toner. Applications include art and printed circuit board etch resist. Another laser printer method for making printed circuit boards is to use something called Press-n-Peel Blue Transfer Film. Works just like a T-shirt iron on decal.

Quick way to initialize a vector:

   fitness.clear ();
   fill_n(back_inserter(fitness), 10, 0);

That clears out the vector named fitness, and fills it with 10 zeroes.

My brother-in-law who works for Chrysler and has a friend at a dealership just pulled up in a new Dodge Magnum wagon on a quickie test drive. It's a pretty interesting car, and I expect that they will sell a lot of them.

Vacation time is coming to a close. We're flying back tomorrow, and back at work on Wednesday. It's been hard to watch what I eat, but I managed to get back on track towards the end.

Alex's Mom got some new carpet, and her Dad put in some baseboards. Alex didn't like the way they were installed, so we reinstalled some parts of the baseboards for them.

I found a cheap ISP that has Windsor/Canadian dialup numbers: Bestrateisp.com. The only problem is that it's $10 a month rather than nothing per month if you don't use it, as access4free.com is. Since I'm in Canada only a couple times a year, I'll have to sign up every time I go to Canada, and cancel service when I leave.

We've all been up in Michigan since Friday. We flew up on July 2nd on Northwest. I'd rather fly Southwest, but Northwest has a direct flight from Austin to Detroit. Kristiana is a pretty good traveller so far. For the 4th, we went up to the house in Ionia to grill a big lunch. It's been almost 20 years since I lived there with my parents, and nothing much has changed except for the size of the trees. They've all matured, and are really beautiful. It'll be more than 100 years before the trees at my house reach a similar state.
