The Robert Jensen lecture this evening was really interesting. It was a departure from the typical scientific lecture into the philosophical. Jensen calls himself a Christian, and I suppose that he really is a kind of atypical Christian. He certainly fits what I think of an atheist, as he doesn't seem to hold any super...natural views at all. I think I understand what he means by "scientific arrogance," which I initially misunderstood to be a criticism of science or of scientists. He's actually making moral judgements on what use the products of science are put to. Anyway, I found it a worthwhile challenge to consider his ideas and his perspective. /n

What I don't undertand with the pro-life crowd, is why in the hell do they say they are pro-life and yet say it is o.k. to have an abortion in the cases of rape and incest. Are those lives any less valuable?

I'm going to make this compact. There's literally an entire book that is being left out of this post.

Conservatives believe that a strong father is at the head of the family. The strong father's job (among many) is to enforce discipline his children through punishment for the purpose of raising them to be strong fathers (and traditional women) in families of their own someday.

Therefore, discipline is a conservative moral value. It's subjecting your own impulses to the purpose of the family.

So, we have disciplined women who subject their own impulses to the purpose of the family (headed by the strong father). And we have undisciplined women who do not do that.

Thus being forced to raise a child becomes a PUNISHMENT for a lack of discpline (getting pregnant).

The rape and incest exception is where the conservatives get separated from the worst authoritarians.

Authoritarians are people who value obedience even higher than discipline, so they're not open to violating a rule just because there was no breach of discipline.

To the authoritarian, a rule is a rule, and getting pregnant means you're having the baby.

Hope this helps to explain the conservative mentality with respect to abortion. /n
