My website has been looking pretty bad for a while now. Firefox 3 doesn't render it correctly, probably due to some CSS coding errors. I've wanted to change the site for a while now, so this is probably a good time to do it.

I have a new site template which will change the appearance, and in the background I am developing a new set of Python scripts which I use to generate all the pages. The old Python script is a hacked up mess which I originally wrote back in 2001.

The new design will be up soon, but missing a lot of things. Over time I'll move the missing pieces over. /n

Last night someone went through the entire neighborhood and stole all the Obama signs. I have a bunch, so a new one went up almost immediately. Don't they know that for every sign sold Obama gets 10 bucks? Signs used to be free, but no longer. Every sign theft is now effectively a campaign donation. Thanks, sign thieves! /n

I've been re-learning the optics that I've forgotten. Kristiana and I are going to build a low power microscope suitable for looking at bugs. We built an optical bench using some Sculpey and lenses from a junk camera to test some ideas last weekend. The source for the lenses that I'll use is Surplus Shed, so I can only pick lenses which I think will be approximately correct for my application.

The goal is to build a simple microscope using a telescope eyepiece and a single achromatic or apochromatic objective lens. I want the final magnification to be approximately 15X, which will be just right for comfortably looking at bugs. I also have to consider that Kristiana is only 4 years old, so a higher powered microscope might be a little difficult for her to use. /n
